Blog Archive University of Chicago (Booth) Essay Analysis, 20172018

Blog Archive University of Chicago (Booth) Essay Analysis, 2017â€"2018 *Please note: You are viewing an essay analysis from the 2017-2018 admissions cycle.  Click here to view our collection of essay analyses for the current admissions season.   For the third year in a row, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business is maintaining its rather unique “essay” question in which it asks applicants to select from a group of images depicting key moments in the Chicago Booth MBA experience and explain why the chosen image “best resonates” with them. When this prompt was first introduced in 2015â€"2016, the school offered a collection of 16 photos from which candidates could choose; last year, the group was reduced to ten. This season, Chicago Booth is presenting just six image options. We are unaware of the exact reasons behind this continued minimizing, but we theorize that certain types of photos were rarely chosen or did not elicit the kind of response the admissions committee ultimately felt was helpful in evaluating candidates. Another possibility is that multiple photos may have inspired very similar essays, so only one such picture was needed. Or Chicago Booth may have wanted to focus applicants on specific as pects of its program and therefore eliminated any images not related to those elements. This year’s photos again come with captions describing the depicted sceneâ€"an important factor in this equation in that an individual might be strongly drawn to a particular image, but the associated caption might influence his or her initial interpretation of it in some way. The bottom line is that with this nontraditional prompt, the school puts a significant amount of power in candidates’ hands in letting them select from a group of options, which thereby lets them better control the impression of themselves they want to present. We hope that you will find Chicago Booth’s essay question exciting and inspiring, rather than intimidating, and offer the following analysis to help you plan your response. The following is a collection of shared Booth moments. Choose the moment that best resonates with you and tell us why. Choose the format that works for you. Want to illustrate your response visually? Submit a slide presentation. Like to express yourself with words? Write a traditional essay. Use the format that you feel best captures your response, the Admissions Committee has no preference. Determine your own length. There is no prescribed minimum or maximum length. We trust that you will use your best judgment in determining how long your submission should be, but we recommend that you think strategically about how to best allocate the space. Technical Guidelines File Size: Maximum file size is 16 MB. Accepted Upload Formats: Acceptable formats are PDF, Word, and PowerPoint. We strongly recommend converting your piece to a PDF file prior to submitting. Multimedia Restrictions: We will be viewing your submission electronically and in full color, but all submissions will be converted to PDF files, so animation, video, music, etc. will not translate over. In offering advice to applicants on how best to approach its unorthodox essay prompt, a member of the Chicago Booth admissions committee stated on the department’s blog, “Simply put, we want applicants to have fun with the question and let their personality shine through. Focus less on curating a certain image and more on embracing who you are. Please trust when I say that there is no hidden meaning in the prompt.” We sincerely hope you will take the school’s counsel to heart and let go of any fears you might have about choosing the “wrong” image. Every MBA program’s essay questions share a common purposeâ€"to help the admissions committee learn about youâ€"and this is just a very pure and creative way of approaching the issue. Chicago Booth is not testing you. It is merely offering a novel way of inspiring a discussion about something you feel is fundamental about youâ€"something you want the school to know about who you are, where you have been, and/or where you want to go in the future. The photos provided are very malleable, so they all offer a good opportunity to convey key messages about yourself. With a little time and contemplation, you should begin to feel a genuine connection with one of the options. You might pick an image that connects with or recalls an important event from your past that had a significant impact on you and colors the person you are today. You could instead opt for a photo that relates to your aspirations as a Chicago Booth student or in your career. Another option is to select a picture that elicits a more emotional response from you and correlates with one or more of your core values or beliefs. Perhaps a good approach would be to let the image choose you, so to speak. With this essayâ€"as with all application essays, of courseâ€"being sincere is crucial, so you will likely be able to craft your most compelling response when you feel a genuine attraction to the photo you choose. And do not merely identify an attribute in a photo and riff for a thousand words on what you feel are your most impressive accomplishments; instead, really get to the heart of how and why the image speaks to you personally. If you truly own your experiences and provide sufficient det ail in showcasing them, your message will come across as authentic. You can choose from multiple format options beyond the traditional essay for your submission, which no doubt adds to this prompt’s intimidation factor for some applicants. We offer no recommendation with respect to whether a written essay, a PowerPoint presentation, or any other format is “best” in this case. Opportunities are certainly available in both traditional and creative approaches, depending on where your strengths lie. We do, however, recommend that if you choose to write an essay, you limit yourself to no more than a thousand words. Optional Essay: Is there any additional information that you would like the Admissions Committee to know? If so, please address in an optional essay. (300 words maximum) Chicago Booth’s optional essay prompt is rather open-ended in that it does not specify that you discuss only problem areas in your candidacy, though it does restrict you to just 300 words. Nevertheless, this is still your opportunity to addressâ€"if you need toâ€"any lingering questions that an admissions officer might have about your candidacy, such as a low GMAT or GRE score, a poor grade or overall GPA, or a gap in your work experience. Do not simply try to fill this space because you fear that not doing so would somehow count against you. And however tempted you might be, this is not the place to reuse a strong essay you wrote for another school or to offer a few anecdotes you were unable to share in your required essay. But if you truly feel that you must emphasize or explain something that would render your application incomplete if omitted, write a very brief piece on this key aspect of your profile. For more guidance, we encourage you to download your free copy of our mbaMi ssion Optional Essays Guide, in which we offer detailed advice on when and how to take advantage of the optional essay, with multiple examples, to help you mitigate any problem areas in your application. Reapplicant Essay: Upon reflection, how has your perspective regarding your future, Chicago Booth, and/or getting an MBA changed since the time of your last application? (300 words maximum) With this essay question, Chicago Booth is testing your resolve and your reasoning. We surmise that the school wants to be certain you are not just stubbornly following a path and trying to “finish what you started,” so to speak, but that you have truly reassessed your needs in the aftermath of your unfortunate rejection. We recommend that you discuss your subsequent growth and development as they pertain to additional personal and professional discovery, which validates your need for an MBA. In the interim, some of your interests or goals may have changedâ€"that is not a bad thing, and the admissions committee will not automatically assume that you are “wishy-washy,” unless you give them good reason to do so. Just be sure that any of your goals that have changed still logically connect to your overall story and desire for an MBA. Your aspirationsâ€"new or originalâ€"need to represent a compelling progression of the growth you have achieved in the past year.     Post-Interview Essay: If you are fortunate enough to be invited to interview with Chicago Booth, you will then need to write and submit an additional essay of 250 words in response to one of the following three prompts: 1) Share a photo you think would resonate with us and tell us why. Interestingly, after having applicants write about a selected photo offered by the school, Chicago Booth is asking for yet another commentary on a selected photo, though in this case, you have total control of the choice of snapshot. This essay option might appeal to some candidates with whom the initial exercise of picking and analyzing a photo resonated and to whom doing so came fairly easily. We imagine that other applicants will steer clear of this question, however, having done more than enough photo assessment for one season. One key thing to note here is that the school is not asking for a photo that resonates with you but instead one that you believe would resonate with it. You will need to draw on your (we hope by now rather extensive) knowledge and understanding of the Chicago Booth program and identify a picture that aligns with one or more of its primary tenets. Note also that the photo does not to be one of you or even one that you have taken. We interpret this prompt as a way for the school to test once again your grasp of what the Chicago Booth experience entails. Do you truly understand what being a Chicago Booth MBA student will be like? Are you ready for the experience? Are you coming into the program with open eyes and an open mind? If you successfully choose a photo that can objectively be deemed complementary to the school’s community and program, you will convey to the admissions committee that you do indeed “get it” and are ready to get started. Unfortunately, we cannot tell you specifically what such a photo would be, but we hope that if you have really researched the school, spoken firsthand with students and alumni, visited the campus (if possible), and given sincere thought to what you want from an MBA program and what Chicago Booth in particular offers that is important to you and to achieving your goals, you should be able to identify an effective picture with fairly minimal effort. 2) What motivates you? This prompt appears to be a very straightforward, no-nonsense request for information. If you are putting forth the effort and time necessary to pursue an MBA and are ready to take on the two-year challenge of earning one, we have to assume that something is driving you to do so. Very simply, what is that thing? This query’s simplicity might make it challenging for some applicants, but if you have a real fire in your belly, as they say, that is pushing you forward in life, you should be able to articulate this for the admissions committee. Be sure to go beyond simply stating what motivates you and provide some clarifying context as to how and even why. If your children motivate you, for example, what exactly about them is compelling you to take this step? Do you wish to secure a stable financial future for them? Do you hope to make them proud through your success? Do you want to start a business that you could later hand down to them? And why is any of this important to you? The sc hool obviously wants to know what is driving you, but revealing a fuller picture of the source of your aspirations will be key to crafting a truly compelling essay. 3) What was the last thing you searched on the internet and what does that reveal about you? We caution you here to be sincere and not try to anticipate what the admissions committee might consider an impressive or particularly interesting topic. If you spent some time looking up cute cat videos to give yourself a cerebral break between work projects so you could start the next one refreshed and with a clean mental slate, saying so would be better than pretending that you instead spent time researching Newton’s third law of physics, just because that option might sound better. Authenticity is key. The school is seeking another window into your personality, so keep that goal in mind as you craft your essay. Note that the query asks what your search topic reveals about you, so beyond simply sharing the subject of your web search and the reason behind it, be sure to elaborate a bit on how it all relates to you as an individualâ€"either personally or professionally, or perhaps both. Given that you have a week in which to respond to this query and that Google alone processes mo re than 40,000 searches every second, we doubt the school expects you to share what was literally the last thing you researched before reading the question, so you do have some small measure of wiggle room (but again, avoid being disingenuous and creating an artificial answer for supposed effect). Instead, consider the last several things you researched, pinpoint the one you feel would reveal the most about you to the admissions committee, and then fill in the blanks as we have advised. Many MBA candidates find admissions interviews stressful and intimidating, but mastering this important element of the application process is definitely possibleâ€"the key is informed preparation. Relief, Recovery, Regulation - the New Deal - 1341 Words

Relief, Recovery, Regulation When Franklin personally addressed the Democratic Party Convention to accept the nomination, he was the first candidate to do so and thus received a lot of attention. These were the words from the acceptance speech that set the tone for his campaign and his administration: I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people. Let us all here assembled constitute ourselves prophets of a new order of competence and of courage. This is more than a political campaign; it is a call to arms. I think they could have been more successful had the Administration not shot itself in the foot with a perverse economic tightening in 1937. Recovery One of the best examples of a successful recovery program was the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). This program was proposed by Senator George Norris 5 during the Hoover Administration. Resurrected and expanded under Roosevelt, despite opposition from private utilities, The TVA constructed and maintained dams, provided hydroelectric power where there was no electricity before, and stimulated investment in the region. The TVA is one of the shining success stories of the New Deal. A less successful program was called the National Recovery Act (NRA). The NRA established a minimum wage, set working hours, and attempted to regulate prices. The act invested the President with vast authority to intervene in the market economy. One example was power to regulate aspects of interstate commerce, a power that the Constitution invests in Congress. The act was voluntary to business and riddled with bureaucracy. The Ethical Issue Of Abortion Essay - 1857 Words

The meaning of the word ethical is related to moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these. And an ethical issue is â€Å"a problem or situation that requires a person or organization to choose between alternatives that must be evaluated as right (ethical) or wrong (unethical).† And abortion is an ethical issue. Last year in New Zealand 14,073 abortions were performed. 14 thousand potential lives were killed before they were even given a chance to live. â€Å"Abortion means ending a pregnancy before the fetus (unborn child) can live independently outside the mother.† This is an ethical issue because it goes against many things that people’s values originate from for example, the bible, a person’s morals and the human rights act, a religious sacrament etc. and therefore people tend to get quite offended when something they so strongly believe in is being abused, for example the bible, where their religious belief is that every human being is made from God’s image and likeness. There are a lot of different responses to abortion and ones I will be discussing is the bible and Catholic/Christian church, Pope Francis’ view, New Zealand law and organizations helping out. Abortion in today’s society is known to be a contemporary ethical issue in New Zealand because abortion is still legal before you hit 12 weeks of pregnancy. Ad Critique Essay Example For Students

Ad Critique Essay Promotion Critique Robbie Clark Cosmopolitan is a magazine written by women and focused toward women. Throughout the magazine are advertisements for products that would be most beneficial for women. Anywhere from M. A. C. make-up to Guess clothing is displayed for the interested consumers. Within the June 2008 Cosmopolitan issue is an advertisement for Tacori jewelry. It exhibits a black and white photo of two chess pieces, a king and queen. The queen piece, standing upright, is covered with dazzling diamond rings, while the king piece is simply lying down in front of the queen. Along with the chess pieces in the upper corner is the capital lettering TACORI. Although the ad is very simple the product at hand is prominently displayed along with a bold designer name, even the website is noticeable within the fine print. This ad is a good ad since the sparkling diamond rings stand out against the black and white background. The rings are strategically placed on the queen piece since most women are more interested in great quality jewelry than men are. Also, the king chess piece is placed on its side, this is resulting in a hidden message. We will write a custom essay on Ad Critique specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Since men are more likely to purchase the diamond for the women the king piece is symbolizing the price of the jewelry. Tacori is a good quality, designer product which can become expensive. If the king purchased the diamond for the queen he could be ‘fallen over broke. ’ He also could be kneeling to the queen because of the power she portrays with the diamonds. The Tacori Company chose a good magazine to advertise their product. Women appreciate and desire diamonds. The ad also covers the bases of being a ‘good ad’. The product stands out so the consumer knows what the company stands for and the company’s name is bold so the consumer knows where the product is coming from. This ad displays the product showing a high status since it is located on the queen piece. It also makes the expensive price shown but not in a harsh manner. With all bases touched Tacori jewelry is being advertised in a great way. Volkswagen, which is quite popular, is the manufacturer to many different types of vehicles. Starting with the 1933 bug you can find the widely known symbol. Volkswagen has become one of the â€Å"25 greatest cars of all time† stated within Automobile magazine. Volkswagen currently is airing a campaign for the new Routan minivan. Brooke Shields, former model for Calvin Klein, has become the spokesperson for the Routan commercials. There are a couple different commercials advertising the Volkswagen Routan with Brooke Shields that have crossed the line into being offensive. One commercial in particular, Brooke Shields is located in a Volkswagen parking lot stating that the pregnant couple standing behind her were simply having children based on ‘German-engineering,’ which is referring to the new Routan. As the couple try to disagree with her, she continues to state false statistics to prove her theory. Brooke tells viewers that they should not be like Becky, the pregnant women, but to have babies out of love. This Volkswagen Routan commercial is offensive. The advertisement is directed towards pregnant women, stating that they should not have their babies because of ‘German-engineering. ’ This is over-generalizing the pregnant population and belittling them. It claims they are pregnant for the wrong reason. Also, it takes the enlightenment out of the fact of bringing children into this world. Brooke is criticizing those families who are having their child for love. Offensive advertisements can be offensive to one person and great to another. The Volkswagen Routan commercial can easily upset a future mother while being very humorous to a car fanatic man. Even though the commercial is by Volkswagen, Brooke Shields gets come credit as well. When an offended pregnant woman refers to this commercial she will include Brooke’s name, thus giving the bad reputation to her as well as Volkswagen. .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 , .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .postImageUrl , .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 , .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2:hover , .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2:visited , .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2:active { border:0!important; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2:active , .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2 .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1ce7ced37e50be55f7821ece4fd203b2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Truth Exposed in Body Rituals among the Naciremas EssayWhat makes a good advertisement? Does humor make an ad effective or is the cute little animal commercials? Kim Gordon with National Marketing Federation describes a good ad as â€Å"the power to move the audience, really motivate viewers to learn more about or buy what’s being advertised. † To â€Å"make something happen† because of an advertisement is when the good marketing techniques have came into play. Gordon explains that there are four rules that all ads should be based upon when creating an effective campaign. Rule number one – Good advertising changes the customer’s relationship with what’s being marketed. This means that through the ad the viewers’ feelings can be opened up to new moving facts. The Tacori ad for example has the diamonds on the queen piece which suggests power. This can make customers want to gain that same power as well. The second rule – Effective advertising tells prospects â€Å"why. † Why the viewers should purchase the product, should be established within the advertisement. What benefits will the customer achieve with the product; will they be tangible or intangible? The diamond rings tell the customers that they will obtain an intangible benefit of confidence. The third rule – The best ads ring true. Situations displayed within commercials should allow customers to relate to them. This makes the viewers feel they ‘need’ the product since the ad coincides with their life. The final rule – Successful advertising moves customers to the next level. To move customers to the next level you must anticipate what your prospects will do after they view the advertisement. If the outcome is not what you want then you must adapt to a new way so you get the desired results. Also, if the ad does not make any change during airing period then changes must be made as well. When these four advertising rules are followed, the ad campaign will be effectively motivational. Since the Tacori jewelry had participated in these rules, the advertisement they created is a good one. They included motivational techniques to move the customers and tell them why the product will benefit them. This ad must conclude in moving the customers to the next level.

Allomorph Word Forms and Sounds

Allomorph Word Forms and Sounds In phonology, an allomorph is a variant form of a morpheme. (A morpheme is the smallest unit of a language.) For example, the plural in English has three different morphs, making plural an allomorph, because there are alternatives. Not all plurals are formed in the same way; theyre made in English with three different morphs: /s/, /z/, and  [É™z], as in kicks, cats, and sizes, respectively.   For example, when we find a group of different  morphs, all versions of one morpheme, we can use the prefix  allo-  ( one of a closely related set) and describe them as allomorphs of that morpheme. Take the morpheme plural. Note that it can be attached to a number of lexical morphemes to produce structures like cat   plural, bus   plural, sheep   plural, and man   plural. In each of these examples, the actual forms of the morphs that result from the morpheme plural are different. Yet they are all allomorphs of the one morpheme. So, in addition to /s/ and /É™z/, another allomorph of plural in English seems to be a zero-morph because the plural form of  sheep  is actually sheep   ∅. When we look at man   plural, we have a vowel change in the word...as the morph that produces the irregular plural form  men. (George Yule, The Study of Language, 4th ed. Cambridge University Press, 2010) Past Tense Allomorphs Past tense is another morpheme that has multiple morphs and is thus an allomorph. When you form the past tense, you add the sounds /t/, /d/, and /É™d/ to words to put them in past tense, such as in talked, grabbed, and wanted, respectively. Completely arbitrary allomorphs, such as English  went  (go  Ã‚  past tense), are relatively rare in the  lexicon, and occur almost exclusively with a few very frequent words. This unpredictable kind of allomorphy is called  suppletion. (Paul Georg Meyer, Synchronic English Linguistics: An Introduction, 3rd ed. Gunter Narr Verlag, 2005) Pronunciation Can Change Depending on the context, allomorphs can vary in shape and pronunciation without changing meaning, and the formal relation between phonological allomorphs is called an  alternation.  [A]n underlying morpheme can have multiple surface level allomorphs (recall that the prefix allo means other). That is, what we think of as a single unit (a single morpheme) can actually have more than one  pronunciation  (multiple allomorphs)...We can use the following analogy:  phoneme:  allophone   morpheme: allomorph. (Paul W. Justice, Relevant Linguistics: An Introduction to the Structure and Use of English for Teachers, 2nd ed. CSLI, 2004) For example, [t]he  indefinite article  is a good example of a morpheme with more than one allomorph. It is  realized  by the two forms  a  and  an. The sound at the beginning of the following word determines the allomorph that is selected. If the word following the indefinite article begins with a  consonant, the allomorph  a  is selected, but if it begins with a  vowel  the allomorph  an  is used instead... [A]llomorphs of a morpheme are in  complementary distribution. This means that they cannot substitute for each other. Hence, we cannot replace one allomorph of a morpheme by another allomorph of that morpheme and change meaning. (Francis Katamba, English Words: Structure, History, Usage, 2nd ed. Routledge, 2004) More on the Term Itself   The terms adjectival use is  allomorphic. Its etymology derives from the Greek,  Ã‚  other form.

Tips to Help College Students Sleep

Tips to Help College Students Sleep College students and sleep dont often go together. In fact, when things get stressful, sleep is often the first thing to get trimmed from the to-do list of many college students. So when you finally do find the time to sleep, how can you make sure you can sleep well? Use Earplugs Theyre cheap, theyre easy to find at any drugstore (or even the campus bookstore), and they can block out the noise from your residence hall and your noisy, snoring roommate. Make Things Dark True, your roommate may need to be up all night writing the paper, but ask him or her to use a desk lamp instead of the main light for the room. Or, if youre crashing in the afternoon, close the blinds to help darken the room. Listen to Relaxing Music (Softly) Sometimes, turning out the outside world can be challenging. Try listening to some relaxing music to help you focus on calming down instead of everything going on around you. Appreciate the Sound of Silence While music can help, silence can sometimes be even better. Turn off your phone, turn off the music, turn off the DVD you wanted to watch as you fall asleep. Exercise Being physically healthy can help you sleep better, too. Try to get some exercise during the day not too close to when you want to sleep, of course, but even a brisk walk to your morning classes for 30 minutes in the morning will help you later that night. Avoid Caffeine in the Afternoon That cup of coffee you had at 4:00 p.m. could very well be keeping you up 8 hours later. Try water, juice, or any other caffeine-free option instead. Avoid Energy Drinks Sure, you needed that energy boost to make it through your evening class. But getting some exercise or eating a piece of fruit would have worked better than that energy drink and not kept you from sleeping later. Eat Healthy If your body is in a funk, it can be hard to sleep at night. Remember what your mama taught you and focus more on fruits, vegetables, water, and whole grains than coffee, energy drinks, fried food, and pizza. Lower Your Stress It may seem like Mission: Impossible, but reducing your stress can help you sleep. If you cant lower your overall stress level, try finishing a project or task no matter how small before you crawl into bed. You can feel accomplished instead of stressed about all you have to do. Relax for a Few Minutes Before Going to Bed Reading your cell phone, checking email, texting friends, and doing all kinds of brain-busy tasks can interfere with your ability to truly relax and rewind. Try reading a magazine for a few minutes, meditating, or just resting quietly with no electronics you might be surprised at how quickly you end up catching some zzzzzs.

Weekly questions Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Weekly questions - Assignment Example Apparently, US companies are tending towards outsourcing their customer service functions to companies that hire staff capable of communicating fluently in Spanish or English. While majority of international US companies have staff that is multi-lingual, most of them would still prefer to hire companies that possess a similar cultural affinity (Cromie & Zott, 2014). Therefore, they will tend to be more likely to outsource functions to locations that share a similar culture, thus preferring near-shoring. Although American companies have benefited immensely from offshore outsourcing in the past, the increasing investments in customer service has made them aware of the costs of miscommunication on their overall business. The US, as of 2013, had several trade sanctions and embargoes against several countries, including imposing embargoes on arms-related exports, financial restrictions, economic assistance restrictions, and dual-use exports controls. The embargo against Cuba is one example, which involves financial, economic, and commercial restrictions first imposed in 1960 and further extended in 1962 to cover almost all forms of imports (Coy, 2012). An arms-trade embargo has been in force since 1958 when Cuban rebels headed by Fidel Castro seized American properties and nationalized them. In addition, further actions to nationalize all privately-owned companies led to an embargo on all Cuban brown sugar imports. The US government responded to Castro’s Cold War alignment with the USSR by widening the scope of trade embargo restrictions, especially after Cuba hosted USSR missiles on their territory (Coy, 2012). This resulted in freezing of Cuban assets in the US and consolidation of all existing restrictions. Finally, in the wake of the shooting of unarmed US planes that killed four US citizens in 1992, the Helms-Burton Act restricted trafficking of property confiscated by the Cuban government

Activities to enhance learning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Activities to enhance learning - Essay Example Technology can be used to enhance learning and education. Traditional classrooms are increasingly being replaced by virtual classrooms in the globalized education system. Some of the systems that can be used in the promotion of online learning include the use of the audience response systems and clickers. At the same time, advanced institutions are using simulation in the laboratories to prepare the students from the professional market experiences. Distance learning happens when the learner is separated from the teacher geographically and time-wise. According to instructional technology, distance learning is the process of extending resource sharing opportunities to other classrooms through the use of video and multimedia communications. This essay aims at having a creative look into the online activities that enhance student learning, assessment and engagement through critical thinking. These analytical suggestions can greatly improve the learning outcomes of the N534 course. The I nternet is one of the most important media when it comes to online learning environment and technology. Online learning especially in nursing is known to reduce time and space barriers in the process of learning. Online learning can be entirely electronic or a hybrid of learning environments. Hybrid learning tends to combine virtual learning strategies with face-to-face learning. The Internet is known to have introduced the concept of pluralisation of place. This means that persons and participate in multiple environments using a virtual atmosphere. In the case of online learning, the instructor is responsible for moderating and mentoring students. However, the students are expected to have a strong self-drive. The e-learning atmosphere is known to provide a platform for students’ discussions across the continents (Allen, 2007). Students in a nursing class can access online resources, share important documents through online applications and submit examination in the online c lassroom (Bonk & Zhang, 2008). Technology has allowed online students to interact with faculties and mentors. In the online learning environment, materials are presented through videotaping, audio taping, and links to websites. There are interactive websites designed to host online learning environments (Bonk & Zhang, 2008). In the case of learning environments, the interaction can be real-time, which is also known as synchronous, or asynchronous. Synchronous online interactions entail the use of chat room in the process of teaching (Allen, 2007). This involves typing. Asynchronous communication means leaving messages that others can read in their convenience (Shea-Schultz & Fogarty, 2002). In the online learning strategy, the entire programs and group courses are offered online. Online learners can attend virtual universities like California Virtual University. There are unique materials that serve as a means of promoting online learning and teaching. Successful learning must be as sessed on a regular basis. The method of learning has a great impact in the process of learning (Bonk & Zhang, 2008). The entire process and assessment of learning require substantial institutional and financial investment. Institutions must invest in faculty development, infrastructure, and equipment. Technology aided teaching strategies dramatically affect the way teaching and learning occurs. This challenges the traditional relationship between academic institutions and students. Students must be encouraged to participate in the learning process. This entails inviting them to speak in the classroom (Shea-Schultz & Fogarty, 2002). This learning strategy can have a profound effect if the teacher creates a safe environment for the students to learn. The teacher is expected to summarize discussion from time to time. This helps in highlighting key points and allows students to follow on the discussion (Allen, 2007). Th

Capital Punishment :: essays research papers

Capital Punishments Capital punishment is one of the most discussed and argued issue around the world, probably because of it is crucial diversity. The main reason why people have different point of views is based on the cultural, economic, political and social diversity in today’s societies. For example; how is your status in society? Rich people tend to favor the capital punishment, compared to the minorities with poor economic background. Same as Republicans vs. Liberals, Republicans’ tend to have a more positive attitude towards these kind of disciplinary actions compared to the Liberals. The reason why this issue never been solved is because there is no right answer to the question. It’s up to every person to decide what ever they believe is the right or most appropriate penalty for murder. Even the States disagree on this issue. There is an obvious characteristic between the States that favor and disfavor the death penalty. The Southern States tend to favor the penalty compared to the Northern States. There are 37 States that have Capital punishment and 82 % of all executions since 1976 have occurred in Southern States. In New England, only Connecticut still enforces capital punishment. Does it really affect the criminals of the society? Does it really work as a deterrence to commit crimes? Unfortunately the answer is NO. The States who implemented capital punishments have shown no trends of decreased crime rate. In Florida, the murder rates have increased the last three years even though an increases number of people have been executed over the same time period. So, if it not deters crime, why continue to follow the same path. An answer to that is that it still makes people feel more relaxed and secured when they know their State gives the criminals death penalty. The difference between the costs of executing a person compared to give him/her a life time sentence is incredible. The State of Kansas made a survey comparing the costs in 2004, which demonstrated that capital punishment is many times more expensive. For example, the investigation costs are 3 times greater, the trial cost is 16 times greater, the appeal cost is 21 times greater and finally it takes an average of 34 days in a capital punishment trial compared to 9 days in a non-death trial (according to DPIC). As we can see the main factor that brings up the costs for capital punishment is not the execution itself, it is the trial process.

Adult Crime Adult Time Essay

In â€Å"Adult Crimes, Adult Time,† published in the Washington Post on March 29, 1998, Linda J. Collier argues about the juvenile laws and her principal argument shows that children should serve the same time as adults when they commit adult crimes. Collier provides some statistics and examples (Jonesboro shooting, Daily City shooting, and her experience with a particular girl) that support her position regarding the information of the article. The diversity of laws among states made the situation much harder because they cannot come up with a specific solution for the problem. According to Collier, the solution is to create the same set of rules for every state, in order to punish the juvenile who commits adult crimes. However, the lack of participation of the federal government or Congress creates an environment of inconsistency in state laws that control the decision of prosecution of young society. Collier’s article is not a good example of an essay that combines a ll three appeals. The essay contains appeal to logos, but suffers from lack of reliable information of the topic and does not provides a decent amount of evidence that clearly supports her reasons. Also, the refutation of different opinions is unclear along the essay, and does not appear to be made correctly. However, Collier’s ability to build common ground, use sensory language and her appeal to pathos determines the good effectiveness of the argument. The article seems to contain a large amount of information persuading the reader to support the more severe and strict punishment for juveniles committing adult crimes. However, Collier’s overall argument seems weak due to the lack of logical, statistical, and supportive facts making it sound more like a complain instead of an argument. She does not provides statistical facts to support a change in the juvenile justice system, on the other hand, she just advises to change the set of rules without any reliable or factual support. In order to support her claim Collier should provide strong facts, such as, number of juveniles involved in murders and number of violent activities related to juvenile’s individuals. For example, the number of murders done by juveniles in 2003 was 783, however statistics show that the number of murders done by juveniles reached over 1.100 by 2007. In her argument, Collier never gives a clear and evident example of how only extending and implying harsher and more severe consequences will help reduce juvenile crime rates. For instance, there is no reliable measure of improvement that shows that Collier’s solution will decreased the rate of juvenile crimes. Logically, a more severe punishment will indeed frighten and make a juvenile think twice before committing a crime, although it wont guarantee a complete solution for the problem. In the sense of ethos, Collier’s essay comes off as a cold and dry argument due to her strict point of view exhibiting any sort of emotion or sympathy towards the juvenile’s perspective. It is important to keep in mind that kids will be kids regardless of the matter, therefore people tend to forget that they are sti ll in the process of growing up and becoming responsible adults. On behalf of that, kids are vulnerable to make mistakes and careless choices without thinking about the consequences. Collier flat out just wants to extend and intensify the judicial punishment, without any concerns regarding the juvenile’s background, family situation, or any other important factor that relates or leads to a juvenile misbehavior in the first place. Even thought it may sound reasonable to intensify the juvenile justice system, there are specific situations that should be evaluated before considering such changes. Such as, being at the wrong place and at the wrong time, facing problems through desperate matters, and mental problems that could lead to a tragic ending for a kid. Collier does not point out or takes under considerations this other subliminal and contributing factors of various kinds that can play an important role in a young person’s life, making her appeal to ethos vulnerable along the argument. On the contrary, Collier’s appeal to pathos determines her side and stand point of the issue for sure. Clearly, she wants to lower juvenile crime rates through modifying and extending the juvenile justice system. Considering Collier’s plan as a possible solution for the present issue, the creation of common ground is stabled due to the fact that we all want a more safe and developed society for the future. Collier argues in such a way that she makes it seem as it is a perfect world with simple solutions to serious problems. That’s not always the case. Life is more hypothetical than a simple extension of punishments and consequences. On account of what was mentioned before, kids will always be kids and if they do not consider consequences, they still wont consider what Colliers suggest. As a conclusion, Collier’s overall argument it is good. The essay presents many weaknesses related with the appeal to logos and ethos, however her facility to establish common ground helps the confident of the article. Although, ethos and logos does not provide support, the appeal to pathos along the essay is a major strength. Collier should add more reliable information, facts, and statistics in order to make a stronger argument and support all the information contained in it. Coming up with respectful and clear refutations to other opinions will create a bigger level of respect between the writer and the readers, resulting in an excellent and complete argument about the juvenile crime. What is the difference between self evaluation an Example by

What is the difference between self evaluation and self-reaction? The year is coming to an end once again. As the year looms to an end, people often look back to the year that was. At the start of each year, we often do some New Year resolutions. Things that we want to change as the start of New Year signals a new us. And as the year ends, we often do a little self-check and see if we are able to do the things that we promise to change. Need essay sample on "What is the difference between self evaluation and self-reaction?" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed There are two ways to check ourselvesself-evaluation and self-reaction. Now how do they differ? Lets take it from the term itself. What is the difference before reacting and evaluating? These two both involve self-checking but how do we draw the line between the two. A reaction is an immediate response of a body to certain things or situations. An unexpected event or thing can lead us to react in an unpleasant way. For example, robbery or accidents can freak us out and eventually lead us to do the wrong thing. Self-reaction is studying how we react to unexpected situations. It is a check of how prepared and composed we are to handle unexpected things. It is more often a sudden emotion (Harvey, 2002, p. 245). Self-evaluation is actually a closer look at ones self. In newly-opened restaurants, they often give their customers a service evaluation form. They want to know what their customers think of their service. The customers then rate their performance. Now that is evaluation. We rate ourselves from the things weve done from the previous year. It may occur to us that we have reacted so badly in this certain situation. Or maybe this change of perception helps us to be more productive in the every thing. A self-evaluation is a closer look at us, gr ading, even critiquing ourselves. It is a chance of changing the bad habits and continuing the good ones (Harvey, 2002, p. 245). Self-reaction and self-evaluation should be done in a regular basis to help improve ones life. It is a great opportunity to look back and think of all the good and the bad things that we have done and have a chance to make our lives better. References Harvey, L. (2002). Evaluation for What?
